MLT Aikins lawyers participate in Electricity Transformation Canada 2024

MLT Aikins lawyers from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are set to participate in the upcoming Electricity Transformation Canada 2024 conference, held at Calgary’s BMO Centre from October 21-23.

With the theme of “Powering the Transition,” this year’s conference will feature a series of presentations and discussion on Canada’s renewable energy sector – in particular, wind energy, solar energy and energy storage.

On Tuesday, October 22, counsel Kevin Mehi will present on “Legal Considerations for Developing Renewable Energy Projects on First Nation Reserve Lands.” Kevin’s presentation will cover key legal aspects of project development on reserve lands, including project structuring, on-reserve land matters, financing considerations and community benefits. This session is designed to help stakeholders facilitate Indigenous participation in renewable energy projects and is particularly relevant for representatives of First Nation communities, businesses and developers.

On Wednesday, October 23, partner Billie Fortier will present on the topic “Indigenous Equity in Renewable Energy Projects: Financial Options, Legal Structures and Partnership Opportunities.” This session will explore the increasing involvement of Indigenous Nations and Indigenous-led development corporations in renewable energy partnerships. Billie will address potential barriers to forming successful equity partnerships and discuss financing and legal solutions. Billie’s presentation aims to provide insights into development pathways for Indigenous communities, highlighting best practices and success stories across Canada.

Attendees are encouraged to visit booth 930 to meet the participating MLT Aikins lawyers in-person and learn more about our firm’s work in renewable energy projects. In addition to Kevin and Billie, lawyers Brady Chapman and Jordan Riese will be there.

Electricity Transformation Canada 2024 promises to be an informative and engaging platform for discussing the future of renewable energy, and Indigenous equity investments in renewable energy projects and assets, in Canada.
