Winnipeg lawyer Jonathan Kroft is a recipient of the 2021 Queen’s Counsel designation in Manitoba.
Justice Minister (Manitoba) Kelvin Goertzen announced that Jonathan Kroft is among 11 members of the Manitoba Bar being honoured with the distinction of Queen’s Counsel for 2021.
“The lawyers we are honouring today showcase the very best of their profession,” said Goertzen. “These individuals have exhibited a steadfast commitment to excellence in the practise of law while exuding professionalism, integrity and leadership. I extend my sincere congratulations to 2021’s appointees.”
The practice of designating Queen’s Counsel appointments for Manitoba lawyers was reinstated in 2018 when the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba passed The Queen’s Counsel Act with a new and transparent eligibility criteria for lawyers in Manitoba. Qualified lawyers are appointed as Queen’s Counsel by the Lieutenant Governor in Council based on the recommendation of the Attorney General following consultation with an advisory council. The advisory council includes members of the Law Society of Manitoba, the Manitoba Bar Association and public representatives. Chief Justice Richard Chartier of the Manitoba Court of Appeal is chair of the advisory council.
To be considered for Queen’s Counsel, the lawyer must have demonstrated outstanding practice, shown integrity and leadership, made contributions to excellence in the profession and been in practice for at least 10 years.
