MLT Aikins is pleased to welcome three lawyers to the Innovation, Data and Technology group (ID&T) in the Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver offices: Dan Patriarca (Winnipeg), Charlene Lipchen (Calgary) and Cael Hibbert (Vancouver).
Dan Patriarca’s practice focuses on the commercialization and protection of intellectual property (IP), technology and other intangible assets. He has experience in various IP matters, including drafting, developing and advising on IP-related agreements and conducting IP due diligence for the acquisition and licensing of IP assets. Dan is currently pursuing his Trademark Agent designation with the College of Patent Agents & Trademark Agents (Canada).
“The addition of Dan to our Winnipeg office is a reflection of the vast opportunities we see to service the intellectual property, privacy and technology needs of clients of all stages and industries, and in particular in the Winnipeg market,” said Winnipeg lawyer and ID&T group lead, Danielle Graff.
Charlene Lipchen’s extensive experience in intellectual property law encompasses a wide spectrum of technologies and industries, focusing on drafting patent applications and negotiating the scope of patent claims with patent offices. Examples of technologies and industries for which Charlene has assisted clients in obtaining patents include artificial intelligence, industrial robotic technology, clean energy, oil and gas, electrical transmission systems, transportation systems, agriculture, cannabis, medical devices, sports equipment and consumer gadgets.
Danielle Graff stated, “We are very excited to have Charlene join us to help further build out our dynamic and Western Canadian-based IP team. Not only does Charlene have a tremendous skill set, she also has a real joy and passion for going out to meet clients where they are to ensure a fulsome understanding of what they are trying to achieve – what more could you want in a trusted adviser.”
Cael Hibbert has extensive experience in privacy and cybersecurity matters and has notably represented clients before the Supreme Court of British Columbia. As a strategic adviser, Cael assists organizations across various sectors, focusing on data privacy and cybersecurity within Canadian regulations. He offers in-depth knowledge in policy development, training and risk mitigation, particularly post-breach notifications.
“We have seen a tremendous increase in the needs of clients in privacy, data protection and cybersecurity. Cael’s unique experience in these areas will help us to continue to provide industry-leading service to our clients,” said Regina lawyers Kristél Kriel and Nathan Schissel.
